Years after Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back from royal duties, disagreements over privacy, family relationships and Harry’s public disclosures continue to create questions about whether the relationship between father and son can ever return to the level of trust that existed before the Sussexes left royal life.

Recent developments have once again placed the issue under the spotlight. Harry has continued to speak publicly about his experiences as a member of the Royal Family, while his relationship with the King has remained largely private. Supporters of Harry argue that he has the right to tell his own story and explain his experiences. Critics, however, believe that repeated public disclosures have made reconciliation more difficult.

The question of trust became particularly serious after the publication of Harry’s memoir, Spare, in 2023. The book contained highly personal accounts of Harry’s childhood, his relationship with his father and brother, and disagreements within the Royal Family. It also described private conversations and family incidents that had previously not been made public.

For many observers, the memoir represented a major turning point.

Harry maintained that he was trying to explain his experiences rather than deliberately damage his family. He has also argued that the media environment surrounding the Royal Family played an important role in the breakdown of relationships.

But from the perspective of those who value royal privacy, the publication of such intimate details created an obvious problem. Once private conversations appear in a bestselling book, restoring confidence between family members becomes considerably harder.

The situation is further complicated by Harry’s long-running legal battle with the British press.

Harry has repeatedly argued that unlawful practices by sections of the British media caused serious harm to him and his family. He has taken legal action against several publishers and has won or settled some cases. His supporters say his campaign is motivated by a desire to protect his family from the treatment he experienced growing up.

Critics have questioned whether the continuing legal and media battles make reconciliation with the wider Royal Family more difficult.

The King himself has generally avoided publicly responding to the most controversial claims made by his son. This silence has been interpreted in different ways. Some see it as evidence that Charles wants to avoid escalating the family dispute. Others believe that the King’s reluctance to discuss private matters demonstrates how strongly the institution values confidentiality.

It is important, however, not to assume what Charles privately thinks or feels. The King has not publicly declared that he considers Harry permanently untrustworthy.

What can be observed is that the relationship between the two men has remained complicated.

There have been moments suggesting that contact has not completely broken down. Harry returned to Britain on several occasions, including for events connected with his legal cases and family matters. He also travelled to Britain following news of the King’s cancer diagnosis in 2024, meeting his father briefly.

That meeting was widely interpreted as a sign that the personal relationship had not completely disappeared.

Yet contact is not the same thing as restored trust.

The biggest obstacle may be the difference between Harry’s desire to explain his experience publicly and the Royal Family’s traditional preference for handling family disagreements privately.

Harry’s decision to publish Spare demonstrated how far those two approaches can diverge.

The memoir included accounts of arguments with senior members of the Royal Family and described Harry’s complicated relationship with Prince William. Some passages generated worldwide headlines and intensified public discussion about tensions within the monarchy.

The result was a remarkable paradox.

Harry wanted greater control over his own story, but telling that story publicly meant that private family disagreements became part of the permanent public record.

That creates a difficult environment for reconciliation.

Every new interview, documentary or public statement can revive questions about the family’s internal relationships. Even comments that Harry may regard as harmless can be interpreted through the history of previous disputes.

This is why the headline claim that Harry has “proved” Charles cannot trust him should be treated cautiously. Trust is a private relationship, and outsiders cannot know precisely what Charles believes unless he says so publicly.

Nevertheless, the broader issue is real: Harry’s public revelations have created a substantial obstacle to restoring the kind of private relationship that existed before the Sussexes’ departure from royal duties.

The Royal Family has historically relied heavily on discretion.

Members of the monarchy are expected to maintain confidentiality around private conversations, particularly when those conversations involve senior members of the institution. Harry’s approach has challenged that convention.

At the same time, the Sussexes have argued that remaining silent was not always an option.

Harry and Meghan have said that they experienced intense media pressure and that speaking publicly became necessary to correct what they regarded as inaccurate stories. Their Netflix documentary, interviews and Harry’s memoir were presented partly as attempts to tell their side of events.

This disagreement over who controls the narrative remains central to the family conflict.

The Royal Family’s traditional model places much greater emphasis on discretion.

Neither principle automatically resolves the dispute.

Another complication is the role of the monarchy itself. Charles is not simply Harry’s father; he is also the King. Private family disagreements therefore exist alongside constitutional responsibilities and the public expectations attached to the Crown.

That makes reconciliation more complicated than an ordinary family dispute.

If Charles were to discuss Harry publicly, even a relatively personal comment could become an international news story. If he refuses to comment, speculation continues.

The King therefore has strong incentives to remain cautious.

Harry faces a different problem. His public profile is now largely independent of the Royal Family, but his connection to the monarchy remains one of the most important aspects of public interest in his life.

As long as Harry discusses his relationship with the Royal Family, the story is likely to attract enormous attention.

This creates a cycle in which personal disagreements become public events.

The question is whether that cycle can eventually be broken.

A meaningful improvement in the relationship would probably require greater confidence that private conversations would remain private. But rebuilding that confidence would take time, particularly after several years of highly public disputes.

The situation involving Prince William adds another layer of difficulty. The brothers have had an increasingly distant relationship since Harry and Meghan left royal duties. Harry’s comments about William in Spare were particularly controversial, and the two brothers have rarely appeared together publicly since then.

If the wider family relationship is ever to improve, the relationship between the brothers may be just as important as the relationship between Harry and Charles.

Yet there is also evidence that the family situation is not entirely frozen.

Harry has repeatedly expressed affection for his family, including his father. Charles has continued to fulfil his royal duties without publicly attacking his son.

That leaves open the possibility of reconciliation, even if there is currently little public evidence of a complete restoration of trust.

Ultimately, the phrase “he’ll never learn” is an interpretation rather than an established fact. It assumes knowledge of Harry’s private intentions and Charles’s private feelings that outsiders simply do not possess.

What can be established is that Harry has repeatedly chosen to discuss aspects of his royal life publicly, while Charles and other senior royals have generally maintained a more private approach.

That fundamental difference remains unresolved.

For the King, the challenge is balancing his role as a father with his responsibilities as monarch. For Harry, the challenge is balancing his desire to tell his story with the consequences that public disclosures can have on his relationships.

Neither side appears to have found an easy solution.

The future may ultimately depend less on another interview, memoir or public statement and more on what happens privately. If father and son are to rebuild their relationship, it will probably require time, discretion and a willingness to keep sensitive conversations away from the headlines.

For now, however, the controversy surrounding Harry’s public disclosures continues to demonstrate just how difficult that process can be.

The story is therefore not simply about whether King Charles “can trust” his son. It is about two very different approaches to family, privacy and public life — and whether those approaches can eventually coexist without another private disagreement becoming a worldwide news story.
